I love makeup…not heavy looking makeup..but natural looking makeup. The kind of makeup that doesn’t even look like you are wearing any but that just naturally compliments your skin. There’s just something about makeup that makes you feel so much more attractive! But here’s the thing. Makeup is full of lots of crappy toxic ingredients. Well, the makeup you buy from the pharmacy or department store that is. There are healthier alternatives but those too come with disappointments.
I have tried so many safer skin care and makeup lines desperately trying to find something that looked natural, products that actually showed up when applied on my skin yet didn’t clog my pores, and also something that while safer still lasted all day. I mean who likes or even has time to reapply makeup throughout the day? Between patients, meetings, and taking care of the kids I am an apply my makeup once a day kind of girl. So, after trying numerous products and dealing with huge disappointments, and let’s not forget skin irritation because I deal with sensitive skin, I have finally found products I trust and am obsessed with! These products are my go-to for every day cleaner makeup that just makes you look naturally beautiful without the harsh ingredients, and they work for sensitive skin which I can vouch for having tested them out myself.
Why I Made the Switch to Cleaner Beauty Products
Before I became a Functional Medicine Doctor, I dealt with a slew of my own health issues. I battled with weight gain, fatigue, anxiety, and skin that was even more sensitive than it is today. After years of dealing with unwanted symptoms and learning about my thyroid and gut issues, I worked with Functional Medicine Doctors myself before going to school to help others dealing with the exact same issues. Through my struggles, I drastically changed my diet. I started to eliminate the toxic foods that were causing my flare-ups (things like gluten, dairy, and grains were off limits!) I moved to a more Paleo way of eating and felt better than I ever had before. BUT I wasn’t looking at the products I was putting on my skin, which let’s be honest are just as important as the foods we put into our bodies. It’s great to eat a super clean diet but if we are still loading our skin up with toxins, we aren’t doing our bodies the justice they deserve, plus we aren’t giving ourselves the best chance to feel our absolute best.
Since our skin is the biggest organ in the body and absorbs everything we put on it, it is so important to take a look at the products we use which is why I started to make the switch to cleaner and safer beauty products.
Here are some of the scary facts on just how awful those department store beauty products can be.
- Skincare and beauty products often contain endocrine disruptors such as phthalates, parabens, fragrance, and even formaldehyde (yes formaldehyde may be lurking in your mascara!) These can all cause weight gain (yikes) thyroid imbalances, and many of these chemicals have been linked to cancer, kidney disease, and can cause massive stress on the liver.
After I changed my diet to cleaner foods, I knew there were other areas of my life that needed a detox as well. The more I learned about the importance of what we put on our skin, I started to quickly realize that the products my family and I were using weren’t the best and the makeup I was using was full of crap and was most likely causing a lot of my flare-ups and skin irritation. Now, remember when I said I was on a quest to find natural products that lasted all day and were free from toxins? Well, fast forward to years of playing around with different products I finally found the ones that worked for my sensitive skin and ones that don’t look heavy but make you look naturally beautiful.
Do you want in on my favorite products, keep reading! I want to help you eliminate as many toxins from your body as you can, and if you’re like me makeup is a must especially when we live crazy busy lives, chase after the kids all day, and work full-time jobs, not to mention find time to exercise and prep healthy meals for ourselves and the family. With all the craziness, dark circles are bound to happen, right? Since I certainly don’t want to give up makeup and I know chances are you don’t either, I want to fill you in on my favorite products. I have tested these products myself and stand behind them as they are better for your skin, free from unnecessary toxins, and they look beautiful and natural which is my favorite type of makeup.
But before I dive into the products I love I do want to say that there are some other better for you ways of taking care of your skin. For example, we need to talk about moisturizer. Those bottles of lotion you buy at the drug store. Guess what, they are loaded with toxic chemicals and toxic fragrance, but I get it, what are you supposed to do about dry skin? I know for me, my skin is a combo of dry and oily so I definitely have times where I need some moisture which is when I turn to my go-to coconut oil and essential oil blend. When my skin needs some added moisture, I make a batch of my favorite DIY lotion with coconut oil and a few drops of Endoflex essential oil from Young Living. Not only does this smell AMAZING but it is also great for the endocrine system (bonus for those of us who battle thyroid imbalances.)
Products I Love
I have written a few articles on this before but you guys have been commenting and asking me what I use specifically, so here it is….I get most of my skin care and make-up products from Beautycounter and have been working with them for some time now, and I stand behind their products 100%. I also like products from Cover Fx which are very good for more coverage. Since I am about no-nonsense when it comes to my makeup and I only use products that look natural, stay on all day, and are good for your skin I just have to share these products with you. If you are ready to make the switch to healthier better for you beauty products, check out my favs to learn more.
Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion: While we are on the topic of dry skin, I want to share my favorite moisturizer. I go back and forth between making my own moisturizer and using this product. I love this because it adapts to whether you have dry or oily skin and since I have combination skin, this is perfect! This moisturizer helps to keep my skin super soft and moisturized all day, and my skin feels ten times healthier making the switch to cleaner products like this.
Flawless in Five Minutes: Here is the make-up I am obsessed with because it makes you look like you are just naturally beautiful! I also love this because it comes with all the products I need for a put together look; foundation, concealer, brow pencil, mascara, blush, and lip gloss to finish off the natural look.
Pressed Mineral Foundation: Sometimes I use this powder from Cover Fx (I get mine at Sephora in the mall) for more coverage over my foundation when I need something a little heavier but also something that doesn’t look too heavy and unnatural.

I know exactly where you are because I’ve been there myself…I remember being so tired that I could barely function. I gained 30 pounds out of nowhere and had a severe case of brain fog. I also started to get severe anxiety and panic attacks. I was driven and motivated…until I wasn’t. I didn’t know what was happening to me. All I wanted was to get my life back…
Finally, I learned about functional medicine and found a practitioner that I hoped could help me. They ran specialized tests that were far different than I had ever had before. When I got the results back, it turned out I had candida, parasites, high cortisol, the Epstein Bar Virus and many food intolerances. I also had an issue with my thyroid that no one found before because they were using the conventional medicine lab ranges which are way too broad….which I now know is one of the leading causes of hypothyroid misdiagnosis.
I went through treatment of all of these things and it completely changed my life. I immediately lost the 30 pounds I had gained plus more, I had a lot more energy, and my brain fog was gone. I felt amazing and knew that I wanted to help people find the underlying causes of their symptoms and disease.
