Today I am sharing my top 7 supplements to support your thyroid and explaining why we need them. With so many different supplements available, it can be hard to know what you should be taking and what you should not. The first place I start with every single person I work with, is with liver support and here is why..
The liver plays an integral role in our health, think about all it is responsible for…
- Removing toxins
- Balancing hormones
- Storing iron
- Breaking down and metabolizing medications
- Producing cholesterol
- and more…
Whether we live a healthy lifestyle or not, we are all exposed to a certain level of toxins throughout the day. It’s impossible to completely remove all of the toxins from our life. Just stepping outside in the fresh air puts you at risk for pollution exposure. For this reason, most people will benefit from a liver detox. This is how I start all of my patients! For this reason, the number one product I recommend is something to support healthy liver function. The Optimal Reset Cleanse in Chocolate or Vanilla. The best thing about this product is that not only does it support healthy liver detoxification in a gentle way, but it also contains some other essential nutrients like selenium, iodine, zinc and B vitamins for healthy thyroid function. If you do not take the optimal reset cleanse, I would highly recommend you eat 2 brazil nuts per day for your selenium needs, add some kelp flakes to your food for iodine (watch for any inflammation, usually won’t happen if selenium is not depleted), take a B-complex and zinc (30mg per day with food).
Supporting gut health is one of the most important ways to support the thyroid. With around 97% of thyroid issues being autoimmune in nature, and around 70-80% of the immune system taking home in the gut, gut health should be the number one priority. If you haven’t heard of leaky gut by now then have been missing out on some important information. Leaky gut is one of the biggest causes of autoimmune disease. With leaky gut, those tight junctions in the gut become “leaky” and allow things like undigested food particles as well as other harmful toxins and microbes to enter your bloodstream. When this occurs, the immune system goes into high alert as what is being leaked into the bloodstream is recognized as a foreign invader. With the immune system being triggered, inflammation also sets in. Unfortunately, when leaky gut is not addressed and this pattern continues for long periods of time there is tremendous stress put on your immune system. After a period of time, your immune system may begin attacking your own body tissue unknowingly as it is so overworked and stressed from all the foreign particles coming in. This is where autoimmune disease can set in and things like Hashimoto’s can develop. The Ultimate Gut Support helps to support tight junctions in the gut to make sure this won’t happen.
Lauricidin is another amazing product I use frequently in my practice. It has anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-parasitic properties which means it can kill the harmful bugs living in our digestive track that can cause a big problem for the immune system. Here is some more information on lauricidin from the amazon site..
- Promote a Strong Immune Defense* – Lauricidin® supports a healthy and hardy immune system*- a strong defense even when you feel that your immunity is challenged*
- A Gut Instinct – Helps maintain a normal, healthy balance of intestinal flora* and yeast*.
- Absorbs Cleanly by the Body – Pure lipid monolaurin is a naturally occurring monoglyceride metabolized directly by the liver unlike other saturated fats. It is not re-converted into inactive triglycerides.
- Cost-Effective – Lauricidin® is significantly more cost-effective than other competing brands. You may need to take 18-30 capsules a day, or 12 tablespoons or more of coconut oil per day to equal the amount of monolaurin found in the recommended use of Lauricidin®.
Lauricidin® is all-natural, free from potential drug interactions and coconut allergens.
Digestive enzymes are extremely important for thyroid health. When you aren’t digesting your food properly (usually due to the infections and leaky gut we talked about), then you are not able to get all the nutrients your body needs to function properly. Digest Care incorporates a special proprietary blend of various enzymes, including brush border enzymes, that has been meticulously designed to support the gastrointestinal system.* This formula combines a broad spectrum of enzymes to help support the digestion of sugars, starches, fibers, proteins, and fats.* It also includes HCI for further digestive support.
Last but certainly not least is support for your adrenal glands. The adrenal glands play a crucial role in your thyroid health. With chronic stress, the adrenals are constantly secreting stress hormones which include cortisol. When cortisol is constantly being pushed out in large quantities, it can be difficult for the adrenal glands to keep up which can ultimately lead to adrenal fatigue This is where major issues come in with thyroid health. The sudden large quantities of stress hormones followed by a decline when the adrenal glands cannot keep up can cause thyroid imbalance.
Adrenal Solutions supports the body when temporarily under stress or feeling energetically spent. This product is designed to support both physical and mental functionality through the use of carefully selected phytonutrients and plant enzymes. Key ingredients include extracts of Panax ginseng, ashwagandha, and holy basil. It also includes high-potency antioxidant vitamin C.
The last 2 work together so let’s discuss them together…Vitamin D (if levels are low) Making sure you have adequate levels of vitamin D is an important part of supporting the thyroid. However, since vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, I always like to check vitamin D levels first before recommending supplementation. Plus, trying magnesium or cod liver oil first may be preferable, and here’s why. I mention the importance of magnesium because magnesium is actually needed for the binding of vitamin D to its transport protein. (1) Therefore vitamin D depends on adequate levels of magnesium. This is why starting with magnesium may be a great place to start for supporting optimal vitamin D levels in the body. Cod liver oil is another option as it is a rich source of both vitamin D and vitamin A.
If you are suffering from weight gain, fatigue, hair loss and more, click here to schedule a phone call with me, so I can find out where you’ve been, where you want to get to, and how I can help you get there.
I know exactly where you are because I’ve been there myself…I remember being so tired that I could barely function. I gained 30 pounds out of nowhere and had a severe case of brain fog. I also started to get severe anxiety and panic attacks. I was driven and motivated…until I wasn’t. I didn’t know what was happening to me. All I wanted was to get my life back…
Finally, I learned about functional medicine and found a practitioner that I hoped could help me. They ran specialized tests that were far different than I had ever had before. When I got the results back, it turned out I had candida, parasites, high cortisol, the Epstein Bar Virus and many food intolerances. I also had an issue with my thyroid that no one found before because they were using the conventional medicine lab ranges which are way too broad….which I now know is one of the leading causes of hypothyroid misdiagnosis.
I went through treatment of all of these things and it completely changed my life. I immediately lost the 30 pounds I had gained plus more, I had a lot more energy, and my brain fog was gone. I felt amazing and knew that I wanted to help people find the underlying causes of their symptoms and disease.
